Web Design Portfolio
I have my first web design internship interview next week, and with that comes making a portfolio.
How do you all recommend this? Should I print them out as you see them online? Does code need to be added in?
Also, if you have any tips on interviews, those would be appreciated as well.
Web Platform
what exactly is a web platform, is it considered URLs, HTTP, REST, HTML, CSS, JavaScript?
embedding fonts on livejournal
I've spent a lot of time knowing the ins and outs of my lj theme 'tranquility ii'. One of the things I have never been able to figure out is how to embed a font from my own personal font library so that that anybody viewing my blog will see my entries with my selected font, regardless whether they have a copy of it on their computer.
The font in question here is called Chandler, a vintage typewriter style font. From what I understand, embedding requires that a true type font be used. Is there a quick and easy way to convert a bitmap font to the required format? If so, would I be pursuing this objective in vain seeing as I don't know where to begin to embed a font for my livejournal entries?
degrees...
Does anyone know of any web design/graphic design school that offer distance learning?? Preferably in texas.
Embed video
Hey all. What do you use to embed video on your websites? I mean, no youtube or vimeo, something you upload. I used to use Flash, of course, but I'd like it to be apple-friendly. I tried Video-js but it's not working somehow. This is the page where I want to use it, which isn't working well now (2 of those videos play on chrome and safari but not on firefox, even though the code is exactly the same):

Web Design Schools in Tx
Does anyone know of any Texas Colleges thar offer a Web Design/Development degree through Distance Learning?
long, long ago..
I use to design websites all the time back in my early teen years, using html "cheat sheets" and used tables to line up websites. They looked nice for that time.
As the years went by, times have changed - So has web design. Websites look a lot different then they use to. I will be taking classes in university based around Web Design later on, and was curious if anyone had ideas on how to brush up on those skills.
I noticed quite a few people using Adobe Dreamweaver to create code. Is there any other programs used or any books/websites to look into?
Any pointers/suggestions would be mighty helpful.
Blending mode in CSS
Hi all. I hope you guys can help me, google wasn't that big of a friend in this case.
So I'm making a menu area for my website with the following characteristics:
. The area is defined by an image that's randomized from a selection of images with the same size. . Over the image there are the menu items, in white and always the same. . When you roll over a menu item, a red bar appears between the image and the type, making it clearer. If you're not rolling over, the current page is selected in the menu in the same way.
Now here's my problem: I want the red bar to have a multiply blending mode, not a simple red block or transparency. Since the image is random, this has to be a property of the bar, regardless of what under it. Is this doable in css? Js? Multiply is basically a digital equation, so I hope it's possible.
Or you can just mock me if there's something essential I'm forgetting. HALP.
Hi there! I'm working on a project for a class Introduction to Programming. I'm using Eclipse to do a basic program - well supposed to be basic. It says I have some errors in the bit I've already coded but I can't seem to be able to figure it out.
Would there be anyone willing to help me or where you would suggest I look? The problem is with the scanner and the if statement.
Speaking of flame... Why Hate Word-Press?
I would love to hear lol... (I use it myself but not to use/give/skin for someone else!) Seriously, I have a hard time articulating myself on this and could use some help. And feel free if you disagree! Just let you count the ways...
Frameworks and Web Design Advice
Background info: I am a graphic design major who's interested in and currently taking a course on web design. I'm also minoring in computer science, and taking Web Architecture and Application Development right now. Our last assignment for this class is to create our own application, using whatever language we'd like. He's currently going over Apache Struts, but we're not required to used that. We'll just be more on our own if we choose another language.
I'm not sure I want to devote a ton of time to teaching myself a new language, unless it's definitely going to help me if I were to continue pursuing web design more. I was originally thinking I may try PHP, and using this handy dandy chart on wiki, I determined that Joomla seems like the thing to use if I want to go that route (I believe we need the MVC thing). My web prof also suggested I look into Ruby, and Ruby on Rails.
So my question to you is, which would be more advantageous to learn, PHP and Joomla, or Ruby and Ruby on Rails?
And secondly, how difficult is it to learn them? (I know Java, HTML, and CSS. And COBOL, but that hardly seems relevant) Is one easier than the other? This project is due in about 4 weeks, and the application has to be fairly complex. Am I a lunatic to consider teaching myself a new language and create an application using it in that amount of time? Should I just go with Struts since I'd be able to get more help from my professor?
I'm in the process of researching this on my own, but I'd love to hear any advice or suggestions you have in the matter, since I don't know many people in web design.
Thanks!
The Flash question
Been a while since I posted here so I figured I'd tackle the Flash issue. Why not go for controversial? lol
Our company will turn away clients who want Flash sites. Read that again. On all of my systems, Flash is blocked. Site is all Flash all I see is a grey circle with a white triangle.
This is not a Flash bash post. Not in the least. Flash is great for games and subtle use.
Here are the 3 reasons we quote to potential clients as to why we will not incorporate Flash:
1. Does not have full acceptance. Think iPad/iPhone. 2. Many visitors are doing so with rate plans. Flash files are not tiny. And yes, as with all things, there are exceptions. Thinking big picture here. 3. Speed. Google ranks by it. Visitors will stay on your site if it loads quick. Flash will not. Plus if you do not include an .xml file, the search engines will skip over your site.
Let the flaming begin...
EDIT: just to make some uncomfortable, we do not have a degree requirement. We hire based on talent only.
EDIT #2: Willing to bet that those who support Flash use Apple products like Mac OS/X
SWFtools for Drupal - any experience out there?
I have downloaded and installed swftools, but I'm totally unclear on how to use it... Anyone? THANKS! Eventually I want to load up catalyst projects which additionally have a lot of odd supporting files, embedded assets, own style-sheets etc... Drupal is pretty potent/fun, I must say.
css book recs?
Hello,
I was wondering if anyone out there had any recommendations as far as books covering CSS table less layouts that wouldn't be too complex?
Thank you in advance.
RSS channel icon
Hi!
Can somebody explain me how to change my RSS channel's default icon to personal logo (like those shown at the screenshot)?
Thank you!

Advice and reference needed
Hello :) I'm new here and so I hope this post fits with community rules ok... My friend wants to start her own busines (yoga center) and she wants to have a website for the shop. While surfing she's encountered some remote web design fcompany and has chosen a template. It looks pretty nice and costs ok. I'd like to ask you if someone had an experience with this? Do you like the site template at all? Here is it http://templatesellers.info/livedemo-536.html
horizontal scrolling in Flash
Hello everyone
Does anyone know how to use Flash (AS2) to make a window that scrolls horizontally when you hover the mouse across it?
Or if not, a window with scroll buttons so that it can scroll horizontally?
I have a long panoramic scene that needs to be within a box so that people can scroll across it.
Thanks :)
Photoshop Elements Question
I do my company newsletter in Photoshop Elements 8. I have to save it in PDF format for the web. I'm noticing that the text in the PDF is not coming out very sharp at all. It looks sharp in some places and really blurry or kind of jagged in others. I usually flatten the image before I save it to reduce the file size. They like it to be sized to 8.5 x 11 for people that want to print it out so I can't reduce the image size. Any ideas what the reason behind the blurry text might be?
Here's the link: https://www.angelsathomehealthcare.com/newsletter.pdf
Thanks for any help!
P.S. This community has some really odd tags!
First Catalyst Site
It took a while on it to manage dreamweaaver with the catalyst project, (and I'll use drupal to re-do the mobile page) but here it is, more-or-less in a state.
www.desertpalmyoga.com
Really not sure what else to say, but for a first project I didn't think it's a mess. One thing is that I would like to change the swf into starting earlier... Of course there is loads of blank space for other black shapes, but as proof-of-concept I wanted to get those first swf object to run (they are loaded separately in this case, not embedded).
Sort of enjoying the rollover directions, I've seen that before but want to see it again.
I can't point to a url but one thing is that working with sound etc in Catalyst is pretty easy: One project was a pretty cool beat-box with toggles on the menu, I really liked how the 'dj' could build some music while navigating.
Trying to have fun with Drupal...
Between, deadlines, trying to surmount the learning curve on Drupal developing.
I've been installing themes etc from online and using dreamweaver to move the files around (ftp on steroids).
Did DL a 'module' to allow a wiziwig, but not sure how to make it so as admin, and 'typing out stories', I could insert an image. Though I activated the module, and it is installed, I just don't see how to upload images easily.
This is sort of a simple theme with some nice beige.
I also uploaded Zen and a few accessibility-oriented themes, i.e. skeletons, but if anyone can point me to some better tutorials (Lynda is either waaaay to general or waaaaay to in-depth, somehow) I would be much obliged. Did learn, however, that I've been pronouncing the name 'Drupal' incorrectly for the last few weeks, with other n00b web students lol...
Kindly....
Javascript nightmare
So, I recently rook over a site that was built in tables and used hotspots to create dropdown navigation. The objective was to essentially update the content, so aside from redoing the navigation in CSS and javascript, I did not touch the tables format.
I deleted all of the hotspots, deleted the flat graphic serving as the base, set up a div in the updated CSS sheet, created the < UL > for the navigation and formatted that. Linked the top levels, set up the pop out navigation from the ones that needed it. I am using Dreamweaver 8 on a mac.
I set up draft versions of all of the pages for the client to approve, and the new nav worked as intended on them. Last night, I renamed the pages to upload into the live site, and now the only page on which the navigation works as intended is the home page. On all of the inside pages, the first old drop down appeared on the first nav item but nothing on the rest. I was able to find a strip of script that, when deleted, removed that 'phantom' drop down. But I am clueless about how to resolve the missing new navigation.
Before launching the new pages, I also installed Google Analytics into all of the pages. Thinking that might be a problem, I redid one of the pages without Analytics, but with no change in the resulting actions. Home page, with working navigation:
http://riverviewchamberplayers.com
old page so you can see the contrast in nav, as well as whatever phantom script might suddenly be interfering:
http://riverchamberplayers.com/faq/index-old./htm
I would be very grateful for any help and insight. Thanks so much in advance. This is the first time I have messed with javascript on any significant level, and certainly the first time in setting up pop out menus.
Japanese Font Help
Hello! I'm not the most advanced web designer in the world, I run a little fansite dedicated to a Japanese musician I admire a lot. Recently, I had a problem with my computer and had to format the entire thing and re-install all my programs. To save space, I let go of a few programs and one of those was my Dreamweaver. I opted for the more compact Notepad++ because I didn't really use DW for anything other than maintaining my site (Although there was a time where I loved building sites, I fell out of it and I only wanted to maintain the site I already had) In my switch from DW to N++ the Japanese fonts on all my HTML pages got completely messed up. Even when I change the encoding in the program it comes up as unreadable characters. I have meta tags at the top of my sites for browsers to pick up on the language but it is still unreadable in my browser (FF 3.6.12). I was thinking that the reason may be that I deleted all my previous fonts and didn't back them up and now I have no idea what fonts were used, but this is only a guess, I'm not really sure... Is there anyway to save my current pages by covering them to something or opening them using another program, or will I have to go through each page and re-type all the Japanese that is there? I was hoping to save myself some work, but if I have to do this manually, I will. Thanks in advanced!
BTW: My site is here http://www.suga-shikao.net/. The Main page is the one I opened in N++, edited and uploaded so it's messed up, if you look in the title bar the Japanese characters show up as unreadable, but if you go to another page like this new releases page http://www.suga-shikao.net/release.html the Japanese characters show up fine. I did not touch this page at all.

Probable dumb question
EDIT: Problem solved :)
Okay, I'm busy Frankenstein-ing a site together out of the dissected bits of tutorials, since my actual knowledge of web design dates back to a 13 week course in high school back in 2006. You may headdesk preemptively.
Anyway, my problem is that I have a PHP included navigation bar with some CSS applied to the links as seen here. After a lot of futzing about, the menu part works pretty nicely if I do say so. The problem arose when I came to put the content in my blank pages and realized the way I'd coded it made every single link on the page look like the navigation bar. Excellent.
So, since I'm a bit out of my depth in understanding all the details of how the code actually works, I'm going to paste everything that could possibly be relevant here under a cut.
The relevant section of my style sheet:
div#aside (this is the div container that holds the navigation bar) ul { list-style-type:none; margin:0; padding:0; position:fixed } a:link,a:visited { display:block; font-weight:bold; font-size:2em; font-family: 'Tangerine', 'Zapfino', 'Apple Chancery', 'Monotype Corsiva', 'URW Chancery', 'Segoe Script', cursive; color:#FFFFFF; width:190px; text-align:center; padding:4px; text-decoration:none; text-transform:none; } a:hover,a:active { background-image:url('glow.png'); background-repeat:no-repeat; background-position:center bottom; } Navigation bar code (contents of .txt file included with PHP):
<ul> <li><a href="top.html"><img src="logo.png" border="none" width= 200px></a></li> <li><a href="index.php">Home</a></li> <li><a href="lyrics.php">Lyrics</a></li> <li><a href="translation.php">Translation</a></li> <li><a href="about.php">About</a></li> <li><a href="http://amaiakuyume.livejournal.com">Blog</a></li> </ul> The page layout itself:
<div id="body"> <div id="aside"> <?php include("inc_navbar.txt"); ?> </div> <div id="article"> <h1>Title</h1> <p><br> <br> TEXT <br> <br> <a href="link.html">This is a link</a> (link that should look normal but isn't) </p> </div> </div> How do I handle this? Is there just a little screw-up somewhere in there that's ruining everything, or do I need to try a completely different way of coding this to get it to work correctly?
