O HAI LIVEJOURNAL
past years: 2009 2008 2007 2006 2005 2004 2003 2002 2001
things that happened in 2010: - moved out of the Treehaus, after some truly epic landlord drama that I don't feel like rehashing, to a charmingly slanted place named the Blauhaus with Dan and the pig. - my grandfather happened to die in the middle of said drama/move. I wasn't particularly close to him (the only language we have in common is German, which I suck at) so i'm not sure how i feel about that specifically, but not being able to be there for my mom ... kinda sucked. - I flew back east twice: once for my grandmother's 90th birthday party and once for my cousin's wedding, which was kind of a big deal. - My best friend since fifth grade, who I'd lost touch with in college, found me on the facebook. I got to meet her 6-month-old son over this past Christmas break. - I got a smartphone (which has distracted me more than anything in my life ever) and an IUD (which hurt more than anything in my life ever, but apparently half of my epic headaches were from hormonal birth control, so the overall pain level is probably a wash).
things that happened in 2011: - dan and I had an epic... "fight" kind of implies that there was one episode and it's resolved, which is not the case...thing. i don't really want to get into it (largely because i think it was mostly my fault for handling some things about as badly as i possibly could). but i live by myself now. - turned 30, got my nose pierced. - Garfunkel is still alive. David got him a sushi costume for Halloween.
 - saw Moby in concert and realized that i had been listening to him longer than some of the concertgoers had been alive. - went to rave camp. David was being effusive about how much he loved me and wanted to grow old with me and stuff, so I said "Well, marry me then," and he said "Okay!" and then the Titanium Sporkestra walked by. - adopted my own cat. her name was Minnie at the shelter, but i couldn't bring myself to call a 17-pound cat Minnie, so she is now known as Wednesday (or, more commonly, Kitteh). She spends a lot of time catloafing and saying "meh" and pees on the bed when she's upset. Garfunkel confuses the hell out of her.

so... i guess it's time for year in meme. or year in survey, anyway.
1. What did you do in 2011 that you'd never done before? Got my nose pierced. Went to rave camp. Got engaged, wore an engagement ring, tried on giant floofy dresses wider than doorways, all that related stuff. Adopted a cat. Spent over $100 on my hair in one shot (to put dark purple highlights in. it was totally worth it). Went to multiple parties. I want to say "played with a baby," but that must have happened before and I just forgot. Petted corgis.
2. Did you keep your New Year's resolutions, and will you make more for next year? I don't think I made any last year. I intend to write more and take better care of myself. I do not actually have a plan for how either of those things is going to happen.
3. Did anyone close to you give birth? The world now contains Odin, Winslow and Erik.
4. Did anyone close to you die? No.
5. What countries did you visit? Canada.
6. What would you like to have in 2012 that you didn't have in 2011? A government that has actually read the f**king Constitution. ...okay, i'd like a tablet computer too.
7. What date(s) from 2011 will remain etched upon your memory, and why? New Year's party. Critical Massive (mini local Burning Man, which I affectionately call rave camp). Our engagement and the related announcements/squeeing. The Meeting of the Parents. Meeting Wednesday & taking her home.
8. What was your biggest achievement of the year? I got out of the house occasionally and improved my emotional literacy.
9. What was your biggest failure? Coming extremely close to losing my best friend.
10. Did you suffer any illness or injury? The usual colds/b***hy shoulder.
11. What was the best thing you bought? The cat was technically free (adult cats were on sale at the humane society that week). David's engagement ring - because it is pretty, because he likes it, and also because it confuses people. I also got a f**king sweet pair of boots, or maybe that was last year. I upgraded the crap out of my computer and I got a couple of shelves at ikea that totally pulled my place together. And I picked out a wedding dress.
12. Whose behavior merited celebration? David, as always.
13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed? Dan until I had a clue where he was coming from. My own, as always. The government, as always. Wednesday's bed-peeing and habit of waking me up an hour before the alarm goes off by stepping on my boobs and sticking her tongue in my mouth. (SERIOUSLY CAT WTF)
14. Where did most of your money go? Rent, utilities, noms, finding out that the cat didn't have a UTI and was just peeing on the bed to express herself.
(i do love the cat. she just has to have some super annoying habits, because she's a cat and that's how they roll. at least she rarely barfs.)
15. What did you get really, really, really excited about? wedding planning and the cat. also tang mimosas.
16. What song will always remind you of 2011? Lady Gaga, Ke$ha and LMFAO. (This is all Nils' fault.)
17. Compared to this time last year, are you: i. happier or sadder?: Happier. ii. thinner or fatter?: The same. iii. richer or poorer?: The same.
18. What do you wish you'd done more of? Making stuff.
19. What do you wish you'd done less of? Messing around with my phone instead of doing things I was supposed to be doing. Being at work. Freaking out.
20. How will you be spending Christmas? In Philly with David and my (father's side of the) family.
21. What was the best book you read? Well, I actually read a couple of books...maybe I'll get my reading mojo back after all. History of the Wife - Marilyn Yalom Glory Season - David Brin Offbeat Bride - Ariel Meadow Stallings and the first couple chapters of Game of Thrones, which I'm afraid to get into because I've heard that pretty much everybody dies.
22. Did you fall in love in 2011? I stayed in love.
23. How many one-night stands? I do actually have a nightstand now. Very useful. :p
24. What was your favorite TV program? Portlandia. I still don't have tv.
25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year? No.
27. What was your greatest musical discovery? See #16.
28. What did you want and get? An engagement ring, an apartment, a nose ring, a cat.
29. What did you want and not get? A fulfilling job, a dog, a house, to sort things out with Dan (though we are attempting to sort), an iPad, world peace, and a billion dollars.
30. What were your favorite films of this year? Uh...I guess I watched Tron, Road to Wellville, and Inception...that may have been it. Well, and HUMP!. Seems like there must have been something else.
31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you? I turned 30 and was angstful about it. In retrospect this was probably annoying, since I'm the youngest person I hang out with. I'd been sick all week and Nils and David moved all my crap to my new place. Mostly I remember walking in and seeing my bed all ready to collapse on. Then Sage came up for the weekend and azriel_abyss happened to be in town for a conference.
32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying? The ability to communicate like an adult.
33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2011? Tshirts and jeans and "maybe I should actually dress like a grownup now" with an occasional "i seem to be at some form of social event, i should dress like the natives".
34. What kept you sane? David and bupropion.
35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most? David Tennant and the chick in Tron, I guess.
37. Who did you miss? My family.
38. Who was the best new person you met? Moonrock.
39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2011: ...so much, but I don't feel like I can verbalize most of it. "Reality is that which, once you stop believing in it, refuses to go away." - Philip K. Dick
40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year: This is a gift, it comes with a price Who is the lamb and who is the knife? Midas is king and he holds me so tight And turns me to gold in the sunlight - florence and the machine, "raise it up"
41. What concerts/shows did you see? Beats Antique, Moby, TMBG/Jonathan Coulton...Girlyman maybe? Omar Souleyman. Must have been something else.
so...i guess i have a wedding and honeymoon to look forward to next year. eep! and now David wants to go to a party so i will stop typing and leave the house.
tl;dr: i got engaged to sabio! and adopted a cat! and my life is pretty f**king awesome.
I am out of the habit of writing, but there are only so many ways to say that work is stressful, David is wonderful, and Garfunkel and Steve are cute.

Have a blurry pig.
(My mom emailed me about this picture to ask if I was sick because I have vicks vaporub on my bedside table. No, I just haven't cleaned it off in months.)
i dreamed that "bokeh" was a photo printing process which made colors far warmer than they would ordinarily be. (this is not true. it is photo-related, which i knew from spending too much time on flickr last night being reminded that i really shouldn't even bother taking pictures, but it is about blur, not color.)
also i dreamed that my dead guinea pig came back to tell me that my dad had cancer (he doesn't, afaik) by tugging on his pant leg. way to wig me out, twee.
and there were like five pigs that were almost nori, and they kept hiding in the closet.
i really hope next week sucks less.
Official 2009 Recap Post
past years: 2008 2007 2006 2005 2004 2003 2002 2001
The method: Copy and paste the first sentence of the first entry of every month this year into one fun-filled entry.
january: I has new $22 speakers from Fry's that came with a subwoofer. I have never had a subwoofer before. february: i was going to post all the guinea pig nom jokes david and i came up with last night, but i just got back from the vet with twee and the vet says she has cancer. march: photos of pigs and a hippo. april: typing hurts at the moment, but this is Garfunkel pig. he is simultaneously calm and loud. may: Nori pig died this morning. june: i have a work laptop...so now when i work crazy overtime, i can at least go home and eat something. other than that i am trying to stay away from the computer, because now i have fun stabby jaw pain in addition to my usual shoulder/neck/wrist fun, and i'm not even sure who to start seeing about that. july: public service announcement: david and i are going to be in philly from august 24 - 30, if anyone wants to grab some rita's. august: I apparently didn't post anything in August. september: or September. october: today was seattle's annual amateur p**n festival, hump!, and i must provide my traditional recap. november: oh goodness it's been awhile. december: and this is my first post of December.
these numbers are kinda fubar because i deleted some of the duplicate questions and couldn't be arsed to fix them.
1. What did you do in 2009 that you'd never done before? witness death. 2. Did you keep your New Year's resolutions, and will you make more for next year? Let's see..."My main new year's resolution is to knit a f**king sweater, because it seems that everyone else has finished sweaters and I am feeling left out." Status: Fail. I finished one hat (last month) and worked on a clapotis.
"I'd also like to find a way to rearrange my life so it has room for a dog, but that might not be a one-year project, and I can't think of where to start. " Status: Exactly the same as last year.
I don't think I'm bothering for next year except to try to be less of an a*****e, and I have vague intentions of eating less crap, but I say that a lot. I dreamed I had a really great resolution, but I forgot what; it might have been "stop making resolutions I'm not going to keep anyway." 3. Did anyone close to you give birth? Gina and Chris had the cutest baby evar. 4. Did anyone close to you die? My pigs. My mother's aunt (who I may have met once when I was four). Compared to this time last year, are you: i. happier or sadder?: well, this week kinda blows, but generally happier. ii. thinner or fatter?: the same. iii. richer or poorer?: it feels really weird to say "richer". but it also feels really awesome to have a decent savings account. it's not close to a down payment on a house or anything, just a couple months' expenses, but...it is one of the few things that calms me.
