Canon PowerShot ELPH 530 HS WiFi iPad transfer hands-on (video) Sure, your iPad 2 has a camera, but that doesn't mean you should be using it to take pictures. One of the biggest point-and-shoot trends to pick up speed in 2012 is built-in WiFi, letting you capture higher quality stills and videos with your dedicated imaging device and transfer them directly to the web, or to a smartphone or tablet on the same WiFi network. The PowerShot ELPH 530 HS is Canon's latest pocket shooter to employ this feature, and the company had a few samples on hand at CP+ 2012 in Yokohama, Japan to demonstrate how it works. We took the 530 HS for a cordless spin, connecting the iPad to the camera's Ad-Hoc (point-to-point) network and launching the

Siri Might Be Speaking Mandarin, Japanese, and Russian by March Per a report from Chinese tech blog DoNews, the Siri voice-assistant may be speaking the three new languages by March. The website cites an unnamed Apple engineer working on the Mandarin version, which is reportedly already in testing.
Siri currently supports three English accents, as well as French, and German. There's no word yet on when the Cantonese or Taiwanese dialects could be added, or the Korean, Italian, Spanish languages promised on the Siri FAQ. Or the Scottish accent that it so desperately needs. Everybody possesses a good understanding about what's practical with a
device. But when you are able to locate all you can and learn, then

iBooks Author gets new EULA, aims to clear writer's block We've waxed lyrical about iBooks Author at the technological level, but a good self-publishing platform counts for nothing if authors are put off by its terms and conditions. A particular source of antagonism so far has been the notion that, if an author decides to charge a fee for their iBook, then Apple will claim exclusive distribution rights and prevent them from publishing their work anywhere else. Check out the More Coverage links below and you'll see that a number of writers tore up Apple's licensing agreement and flung it into the proverbial overflowing trash can. Now though, Cupertino has done some re-writing of its own and come up with a new EULA. It clarifies

Apple removes standard Mac OS X 10.7.3 download due to bugs, offers combined download instead
Apple’s latest Mac OS X 10.7.3 release is a pain for some users due to its bugs surrounding CUI issues and the crashing of applications. Apple has already been investigating the issues with test groups, and it has apparently decided that the best thing to do at this point is remove the standard 10.7.3 update from its servers and provide users with the ability to only download the combined installation. This combo installer is not riddled with the CUI and app crashing errors as explained in our report from yesterday. Read on for all of the details:

Apple removed its online download page for the standard (client) 10.7.3

Snow Leopard update wreaks havoc on Rosetta, luddite users contemplate running with Lion (update)Normally updates are meant to better your OS, delivering necessary tweaks and performance improvements. But this latest batch out of Cupertino's managed to do just the opposite for users running the Lion 10.7.3 package, as it's caused many applications to force crash and bewildered users to restore Time Machine backups. Well, now the hordes clinging to Snow Leopard can join in the commiseration, as forums begin to flood with reports of failed Rosetta compatibility. That software, essential for PowerPC programs to run on Apple's preferred Intel chipset, has been rendered useless by a just released security fix, prompting one community

ComScore: Android and iOS gallop ahead, US smartphone usage approaches 100 million The latest report is in from ComScore, and as you might expect, the news is sunshine and roses for the crews at Google and Apple. Both companies platforms charted some worthwhile month-over-month gains, as Android is estimated to account for 47.3 percent of smartphones in the US, while iOS runs a strong second with 26.9 percent. Meanwhile, former BlackBerry fans continue to scatter, as the platform now accounts for 16 percent of smartphone users. Similarly, Windows Phone (and whatever's left of Windows Mobile) have taken it on the chin, and have fallen to just 4.7 percent market share. Without ever gaining much traction

JVC's NX-BX3 is an iPod dock that you can put things on top of The next time you buy an iPod dock, ask yourself this important question: can I put a lamp on it? If not, what's the point, really? While we're sure that's not the main selling point with JVC's NX-BX3 home theater sound system with integrated stand, it's certainly an important one. The system features an FM tuner, SRS StudioSound HD and can also hold glasses or a flower vase on its top -- really, the sky the limit (plus some general weight restrictions, we'd imagine) when it comes to the things you can place on top of it. Mac OS X finally gets ZFS support thanks to former Apple engineer

Apple has long been rumored to include support for the ZFS file system designed by Sun, with rumors dating back even before Sun CEO Jonathan Schwartz announced in 2007 Leopard would utilize ZFS as its file system. It even made an appearance in Disk Utility in a beta of Mac OS X 10.5 (pictured right). Although ZFS support was never included in Leopard, it was initially hinted in Snow Leopard Server documentation in 2008 before being removed before launch.
In 2009, Apple had seemingly ceased all work on ZFS. Today MacRumors pointed us to a 2011 Ars Technica article profiling an Apple engineer named Don Brady who worked on the ZFS team

Canalys: Apple leading PC maker in Q4 2011, if you count iPads Best quarter in Apple's history? Check. Retaking the smartphone crown from Samsung? Check. How about becoming the world's largest PC manufacturer? If you're Canalys and you factor iPads into the equation, then yes, another check. Per the research firm, "client PCs" (which include "desktops, netbooks, notebooks and tabs") grew by 16 percent to hit 120 million in Q4, from which Apple's 20 million units (15 million iPads + 5 million Macs) grabbed the leading 17 percent share. Cupertino's followed by HP, Lenovo, Dell and Acer in that order -- all of whom, save for Lenovo, saw their piece of the PC pie shrink. Not only did their slices shrink, but without slates the entire

Steve Jobs Emailed Eric Schmidt and Told Him to Stop Stealing Employees. And Schmidt Obliged. Remember that civil lawsuit looming over the heads of some of the top Silicon Valley companies for conspiring not to poach each other's employees? The latest juicy tidbit to leak from that involves Steve Jobs sending Eric Schmidt an email demanding that Google stop stealing.
Reuters say the email, sent in 2007, was quickly acted upon by a receptive Schmidt.

"I would be very pleased if your recruiting department would stop doing this," Jobs wrote.
Schmidt forwarded Job's email onto other, undisclosed recipients.
"Can you get this stopped and let me know why this is happening?" Schmidt wrote.
Google's staffing director responded that the
