We have all seen one of those car articles and stories where they give you a nice rundown of what exactly this new car can do. Well sometimes people do not really know what exactly they are looking at with all the different acronyms they use. I want to cover some of the most common ones you will see in a article for the newest sports car so that you are not left in the dark when reading this.So before you even think about installing somevehicle trackingmaybe you shouldcheck this out and think about what kind of car you really buying.
The first two parts of this is pretty easy to understand being the Model of the car and the type of engine it got under the hood.
V8-V or VEE
This particular car has a V8 engine and the V simple represents what the engine looks like from the side. It is also sometimes called a VEE engine but the V is mostly because of its appearance. There are plenty of variations of this including VTEC, VVL, VVTI, DE or VVTLi. These are will cover in another post.
KW-Kilowatts
Thekilowattsof a engine is there to show the user the maximum power output of the engine. Generally you will hear guys talking about how muchKilowattstheir cars made on a dyno-tune. This gives others a rather clear understanding of how fast the car is as well. Most racer only give this information away when others want to race against them.
RPM – Revolutions per minute
This acronym is very popular and used across many different types of engines or basically anything spinning. So yes this can be measured in washing machines and DVD players. Basically this is how many revolutions something makes around a fixed axis every minute. Cars can operate at a number of different RPM’s. I’m sure you have seen a rev counter in your car before well that is calculating your RPM. From that you can clearly see that your car operates at different RPM’s all the time.
NM – Newton Metre
This is usually the term used to measure the amount of torque that the car produces. This all ties in with the RPM’s. The torque is the amount of force used when creating the RPM. So with high toque giving you increased RPM’s you get a faster car.
Km/H -Kilometers per hour
Pretty simple one but just in case you have been driving your car and dont know what this is then its the actually speed you are travelling. It is displayed on your speedometer right next to your rev counter in most cars.
The other terms used is pretty straight forward to understand. Zero – One hundred is basically about how quick the car can go from stationery to 100km/h. Fuel Consumption is telling you how much you going to be spending on petrol. Seriously though, in this case for every 100km you drive you will use about 14.4l of petrol. This is just an average figure which could change depending on how you drive the car.
So now that you have a basic understanding of what these terms mean you can go out there and purchase a car and know exactly whats going on under the hood. Be safe!
