Diaper Changing Station

The diaper changing station is not a new invention, in fact all it is really is a place to change your baby’s diaper. Somewhere that is high enough to be comfortable for a parent, without having to get down on one’s knees and change baby on the floor.

However, what is different today is the vast array of designs and materials etc.
Also they are a lot more convenient because they keep all the necessary accessories together at the location where you are going to change diapers.

When we brought our baby home we didn’t really think there was a need for a baby changer and in fact until he was about 2 months old we used the table top and a waterproof changing mat. As with all new babies there is a great deal of expense involved, a crib, cot, stroller, baby car seat, baby clothing etc. etc. It is natural to try and save money where possible.

But as the first couple of months passed it became pretty obvious that changing him this way was really inconvenient, first the table was never clear of diapers, baby cream, baby powder and various other accessories. They could never be put away properly because quite frankly it is a none stop business changing new born babies. Also no table is at the right height to prevent back ache with all the constant bending over.

So a changing station or a baby changing dresser was the next thing on our shopping list.
We were now, I will not call it desperate but, eagerly determined to buy one.

We took a look at quite a few options and there are numerous makes available by names such as, Rubbermaid, Storkcraft, Sorelle and Panis just to name a few.

We settled on a really nice colorful one. This one had a built in baby bath. You simply lifted the changing area and underneath was the bath. Here I have to be honest though, we did not use the bath at all.
There was plenty of storage space for all the baby accessories and the best thing of all, we could actually just stand up straight when we changed our son.

In today’s safety conscious environment the changing area was also fitted with a safety harness. But, we never used it. Right now I am sure many readers of this article will be calling us irresponsible. But the truth is the harness is uncomfortable for a baby, especially if they move around a lot like our son does. We never left his side when changing and if we needed to leave the changing vicinity for any reason, we took him with us. It takes extra vigilance maybe, but we found it the best way.
