Canon PIXMA MP320 Review
The Canon PIXMA MX320 uses the now accustomed design by having an angled surround at the top, in to which the control panel is placed. In the heart of the surround is the ADF, including a fold-over feed tray, that improves the machine's already clear lines.

There's only a solitary paper feed path from the fold-up support along the back towards the within the machine's front cover, which in turn folds down to turn into an output tray. In a smart minor innovation, Canon rigs this particular front cover to drop down by design, should you neglect to open it before starting to print.

The user interface is nicely organized, with three big setting control keys on the left as well as black and colour copy control keys on the right. In the middle there is a fax number pad along with a two-line by 16-character mono LCD display screen.

Although there is no colour Liquid crystal display, or memory card slots, you do get a single USB port at the underside right of the front panel, that doubles as a PictBridge feed for digital cameras. You may also utilize it to scan straight to a USB drive, which can be a useful extra.

The flatbed scanner mechanism uses a Contact Image Sensor (CIS), but nonetheless provides fairly good black and colour page images. At the rear are sockets for a fax line as well as for a telephone handset, plus a solitary USB data connection. There is no Ethernet socket because, even though the MX320 is designed for small business, it is still made for a single desk.

The two ink cartridges, one black and the other tri-colour, clip in to the print head carrier, after you lift up the scanner portion of the machine and rest it on the blue 'bonnet support' that springs down.

Speed claims have come down to far more sensible amounts due to the development of the ISO test standard, and therefore Canon now quotes 7.5ppm for black print along with 4.5ppm for colour. Our own 5-page black text print took 58 seconds, which totals to 5.17ppm and on the lengthier, 20-page document this goes up a little to 6.06ppm.

The five-page text and colour graphics print only gave 2.23ppm, on the other hand, less than half the listed figure. Photograph prints came through quite quickly, with a 15 x 10cm picture at high-quality taking 1:34 in addition a comparable photograph, in normal quality from a PictBridge digital camera, required a fairly zippy 57 seconds.

Text print quality is nice, although we did notice just a little fuzziness about emboldened characters in printed headlines. Colour business graphics tend to be pretty vivid, although some dithering is apparent. Black text registration is good.

Picture prints, regardless of this particular unit being mostly targeted at business, are outstanding, with clean colour gradations as well as lots of detail in light together with dark areas of a picture. Colours appear genuine and this particular device is very efficient at printing off photographs with a great home standard.

Canon states a noise level of 47dBA, however, if copying and feeding paper we assessed it at highs of 66dBA. This is pretty noisy for an inkjet device however, as customary, it's the paper feed not the print system which makes the actual sound.

The two Canon PIXMA MX320 ink cartridges are the sole consumables in this particular all-in-one and given its targeted market, it is reasonable not to have distinct colour ink cartridges. There's two available sizes for the black and tri-colour cartridges.

The Canon PIXMA MX320 presents benefits for the majority of home office functions additionally, the integration of the ADF and fax features remains invaluable in transferring paper documents quickly. Print quality is a bit more than sufficient with regard to common use and although colour prints may be a tad lethargic, black print draws near the headline figure. Working costs can be on the high side, though, which is really a pity.
