A few weeks ago there were some incredibly scary incidents where inflatables flew into the air with children inside them. Luckily no one was seriously hurt, however, this kind of incident has to make people question whether inflatable slides and bounces are as safe as they thought they would be.
Inflatables are like any other sports/recreational item. Safe use, involves a good amount of common sense and the ability to follow suggested safety tips. Fortunately, there are safety instructions that come with inflatables and if these instructions are followed correctly, using inflatables can be extremely safe and enjoyable.
You would be amazed at how many times weve set up bounce houses in someones yard and gone over instructions with them on how to operate their bounce house, only to find out when we come back that the instructions were forgotten the minute we walked out of the yard.
Heres a classic example: The moonwalk is set up at a beautiful home with gorgeous swimming pool. While the bounce is being set up, the kids are told to get out of pool(by the parents) because there isn’t an adult there to supervise the play. Yet, even after going over the instructions where the owner is told that it is UNSAFE to operate an inflatable without an adult attendant, when the driver arrives to pick up the unit, he finds a bunch of kids in it with no adults anywhere even close to the unit.
The fact is, inflatables are extremely safe, if they are operated correctly.
By the way, since I mentioned the swimming pool incidenthere is a tip; Its not safe for kids to run from the swimming pool to the inflatable. Slightly wet inflatables get slippery and that causes accidents. We dont have the same worry with the water slides. Inflatable waterslides are made for water and people expect them to be slippery. People tend to be more careful in this case.
Weve operated our nflatables for years with no accident whatsoever but there are a few rules that should always be followed:
1) Inflatables should NEVER be operated in winds over 25 mph. If the winds are gusty at a lower windspeed, be safeshut the inflatable down.
2) Inflatables MUST be staked. But the attendant should walk around the inflatable periodically to make sure the stakes are secure.
3) NEVER operate an inflatable without an adult attendant at the door. This doesnt mean someone standing 20 away keeping an eye on things.
4) Like sizes should jump together
5) 3 minutes is long enough to jump when its hot out. Put in few kids for a shorter time for safety.
6) Bounce houses are slippery in the rain. Shut down the unit when it starts to sprinkle.
7) Power needs to be close to the unit, in an area that is non traveled to prevent the power cord being pulled from the outlet, resulting in a deflating unit.
8) Make sure the adult attendant has been trained in proper emergency procedures, not just inflatable safety.
These are just a few suggestions. Common sense is probably the biggest factor. But if these simple rules are followed, then inflatable games are some of the safest recreation you will find. Flying Inflatable Slides and Bounce Houses, is something that we never want to see again!
