Victorian Halloween Costumes
Victorian Halloween Costumes
You would have probably associated the Victorian era with those lavish balls, beautiful countryside scenery, cottage houses and elaborate dresses. A lot of women would have probably dreamed of going back to this time and wear those bustle skirts, fancy feathered hats.
During the Victorian era, a lot of changes happened including those in the area of fashion. The era covers the dates between June 1837 to January 1901, this covered nearly two thirds of the 20th century. It’s a pretty long era and it was reigned by Queen Victoria. Because of the long time period, Victorian costumes are usually broken down into two, the early Victorian and late Victorian.
On the early Victorian era, there’s the bonnets, ringlets curls, constricting arms on dresses and very small waist. Women had to endure painful dresses that constricted and reshaped their bodies. Then came the bell shaped skirts which resulted to bigger skirts. This then requires many petticoats and crinoline for support. Women began to wear evening dresses which left their shoulders bare. They used cashmere wraps to cover the shoulders and warmth during cold evenings.
Later on, princess cut dresses became popular along with the use of bustles instead of petticoats and crinoline. By the last 20 years of the Victorian era, slim fit dresses with trails were popular. There’s even the so called “hard bustle” used at the back of the skirt.
Cloth was manufactured by mills from different towns in 1837. However, clothing was generally custom-made by many specialized tradespeople. They mainly served clients in small shops and they cater to those who can afford this kind of service. For those who cannot afford this kind of clothing, they buy ready made or modify used clothing.
Around 1907, more clothes were factory made and sold in fixed price department stores. Although custom made clothes were still significant, there was less demand resulting to decline. Eventually, the introduction of lock stitch sewing machine in mid-century make dress making easier compared to doing it by hand. With more new machinery and materials, clothing has changed in many ways.
When it comes to Victorian Halloween costumes, women can choose from the wide variety of dresses. These dresses might were usually worn by upper class women during the Victorian period. Those that belong to the lower class such as peasants only wear simple clothing. You can wear those kind of clothes too if you want a simple and basic look from that period.
