Understanding the History of Insomnia
Many people like to blame their lack of sleep on environmental factors and products of the society such as stress. Contrary to this, insomnia cases have been reported for many years before and stress is not the only cause of insomnia. One similarity of cases reported from time immemorial is that people with insomnia get irritable and moody due to lack of sleep. For this reason, many people have religiously come up with routines and rituals that will hopefully help them get to sleep better. However, what has been discovered over the years is that whatever works for one person may not necessarily work for every other person. Because of this, there are now so many different treatment options that have been discovered over the years that people can use.
Historians such as British politician Winston Churchill, renowned author Charles Dickens and American founding father Benjamin Franklin always stated that the amount of sleep a person gets is directly proportional to the bed in which they sleep. For instance, Churchill had two beds and if he could not sleep well on one, he would simply move to the next bed. Charles Dickens had a more complicated rule because his bed had to be perfectly positioned facing north and he had to sleep smack in the middle of the mattress. If this was not done religiously, Charles just could not fall sleep. Benjamin Franklin had problems sleeping on a bed the wrong temperature. If it got too warm, he would get off the bed and somehow cool the beddings then try to sleep again.
When people understand the history of insomnia, they realize that people started using drugs to fall asleep years ago. Drugs should only be used as a last resort to avoid abusing them and hence destrying the natural sleeping cycle. This makes it difficult for the drug to do its work and hence causes more complications such as hallucinations, as is the case with English writer Evelyn Waugh. History also shows that actress, singer and model Marylyn Monroe could not go to sleep without 'calming her nerves' using at least twenty sleeping pills every day. French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte realized that he never got more than 3 hours of sleep a night and settled to that fact and lived his life comfortably. These great historians had different ways of dealing with their insomnia cases, which lets us know that insomnia has been there for years and will be for many more.
