Insomnia can affect the people of all age groups, and among adults, it is more common among women. Chronic insomnia can also cause conditions like anxiety and depression. Stress is considered the most common trigger for acute or short-term insomnia. Some of the causes of short-term or transient insomnia include changes in shift work, jet lag, uncomfortable room temperature, unpleasant or excessive noise, acute medical illness, stressful situation in life, withdrawal from alcohol, drugs or stimulant medications or insomnia related to high altitudes.
Main causes of long-term or chronic insomnia are linked to underlying physiologic or psychiatric condition. A person suffering from insomnia does not feel refreshed in the morning, there is difficulty in falling asleep, or the person wakes up in the early hours and is unable to go back to sleep. Physician performs general physical examination including neurological function, measurement of waist size and neck circumference and assessment of mental status. Unlike few medical conditions, insomnia can be easily recognized because people know when they are not able to get enough sleep.
Determining the right cause is the key to treat insomnia, and doctor takes into consideration several factors while making the diagnosis. Hypnotics and sedatives are the main classes of medications that are used to treat insomnia. For most types of insomnia, the person will not be admitted in the hospital, but as it causes poor attention and coordination, accidents may happen. Once the underlying trigger is corrected or removed, the transient insomnia usually gets resolved.
Insomnia treatment includes eliminating, alleviating or coping with any emotional and physical problems causing the problem. Change in lifestyle can also improve the situation. Some of the simple methods to get good sleep are to take the warm bath, get a massage, drink warm milk, listen to music, or drink herb tea. To help get a sleep, avoid the use of caffeine, find ways to manage stress in your life, exercise regularly, do not take nap during the daytime, eat only light meals before going to bed, and do not lie in the bed worrying about things.
