International Mother Language Day 21 February

International Mother Language Day
-21 February
21 February was proclaimed the International Mother Language Day by UNESCO on 17 November 1999. Its observance was also formally recognized by the United Nations General Assembly in its resolution establishing 2008 as the International Year of Languages.
International Mother Language Day originated as the international recognition of Language Movement Day, which has been commemorated in Bangladesh (formerly East Pakistan) since 1952, when a number of Dhaka university students were killed by the Pakistani police and army in Dhaka during the Bengali Language Movement.
International Mother Language Day is observed yearly by UNESCO member states and at its headquarters to promote linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism.

Shaheed Minar, or the Martyr's monument, located at Dhaka University Campus, Bangladesh, commemorates the sacrifice for Bangla Language on 21 February 1952
International Mother Language Day
History:
On 21 March 1948, Mohammed Ali Jinnah, the Governor general of Pakistan, declared that Urdu would be the only official language for both West and East Pakistan. The people of East Pakistan (now Bangladesh), whose main language is Bengali, started to protest against this. On 21 February 1952, (8 Falgun 1359 in the Bengali calendar), students in the present day capital city of Dhaka called for a provincial strike. The government invoked a limited curfew to prevent this and the protests were tamed down so as to not break the curfew. The Pakistani police fired on the students despite these peaceful protests and a number of students were killed

Valentine's Day News

Valentine's Day
Saint Valentine's Day (commonly shortened to Valentine's Dayis an annual holiday held on February 14 celebrating love and affection between intimate companions.[1][3] The holiday is named after one or more early Christian martyrs named Valentine and was established by Pope Gelasius I in 496 AD.

It is traditionally a day on which lovers express their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery, and sending greeting cards (known as "valentines"). The holiday first became associated with romantic love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished.

Modern Valentine's Day symbols include the heart-shaped outline, doves, and the figure of the winged Cupid. Since the 19th century, handwritten valentines have largely given way to mass-produced greeting cards. It is traditionally a day on which lovers express their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery, and sending greeting cards (known as "valentines"). James Cameron Nominated for Oscars 'Avatar' movie

The best-picture category was expanded to 10 nominees this year, a decision designed to attract more viewers for the March 7 awards ceremony on Walt Disney Co.s ABC. The show drew its biggest U.S. audience, 55.2 million, when Camerons Titanic won best picture and he was named best director in 1998, according to ratings data from Nielsen Co.

We couldnt be more excited to see as many popular films in there, said Bill Mechanic, co-producer of this years Oscar telecast, said in an interview. Its an intersection of commerce and quality. It will be great for the show.

Mechanic was chairman of News Corp.s Twentieth Century Fox when the studio developed Titanic. He produced Coraline, a 3-D film nominated for best animated picture this year.

Avatar, also from Fox, has taken in more than $2 billion in global ticket sales, passing Titanic, with $1.84 billion, as the best-selling movie, according to Box Office Mojo, an industry researcher based in Sherman Oaks, California. source :Feb. 2 (Bloomberg.com)
