Robin Gibb Mourned By Justin Bieber, Carrie Underwood

At Billboard Music Awards, Jordin Sparks recalls paying tribute to the Bee Gees during her time on 'American Idol.'
By Kara Warner

<P>The music industry lost yet another influential artist Sunday (May 20), with the <a href="http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1685455/bee-gees-robin-gibb-dead-died-62.jhtml">untimely death of Bee Gees' member Robin Gibb</a>.</P><P>The news was met with sadness and shock from the celeb attendees at Sunday's <i>Billboard</i> Music Awards. They were quick to express heartfelt sentiments to Gibb's family and friends, as well as weigh in on the huge impact the Bee Gees had on the music industry as a whole.</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Celebrities React To Robin Gibb's Passing" id="vid:770720" width="415" height="255"></div><p></P><P>"Oh no!" Jordin Sparks said in shock upon hearing the news. "I thought he was doing better. Barry Gibb [Robin's brother and fellow Bee Gee], when I was on <a href="/news/articles/1559121/idol-recap-melindas-worst-still-best.jhtml">'[American] Idol,' he was one of our mentors</a>, and it was so amazing to meet him. I actually discovered my love for Bee Gees music through that week, and 'Too Much Heaven' and 'Emotions' are two of my favorite songs, and 'Stayin' Alive,' of course. Classic. But it's so sad," she added. "I just can't [believe it]."</P><P>"I definitely listened to the Bee Gees," Justin Bieber told us. "I'm not too familiar with them, but it's definitely sad what happened. My heart goes out to him and his family."</P><P>"My first memory of the Bee Gees was the film 'Saturday Night Fever,' which is one of my favorites," recalled Max George of the Wanted. "I love the Bee Gees. They're obviously legends and heroes of ours and people we look up to. It's a really sad loss. Our thoughts go out to all of his family."</P><P>Chart-topper Carrie Underwood remembered discovering the group during her childhood. "My parents listened to the Bee Gees quite a bit when I was little, so I was definitely exposed to them at an early age. They just had a sound that was all their own, obviously, [it was] never duplicated," she said. "They were very influential on music in general, and it's very sad to hear about any loss. There have been a lot of legends lost this year, so it's always sad to see it happen, but they are paying a couple of tributes here [at the <i>Billboard</i> Music Awards], and I know that they'll be classy and respectful and allow us all to remember them."</P><P>Singer/songwriter and recent "Dancing With the Stars" castmember Gavin DeGraw spoke to the group's influence with their own music, as well as the hit songs they went on to write for other artists.</P><P>"Let's talk about the Bee Gees. That's an iconic group. Not just a great band, but a great group of songwriters," DeGraw said. "Even long after the Bee Gees' success on the pop charts, they were still writing songs for other people, huge hit songs. Their talent went far beyond their moment of normal pop success. It is a loss to the music industry and a loss of an iconic group. The beauty of this industry is that we do pay tribute and every artist coming up is a fan of a generation prior to it, so there's a real tradition element to it."</P><P><i>Please share your condolences for Gibb's family, friends and fans in the comments.</i></p>

Lady Gaga's Born This Way Ball Kicks Off Amid Protests

Seoul, South Korea, set list heavy on new material, but Gaga's biggest hits come out to play.
By John Mitchell

<P><a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/lady_gaga/artist.jhtml">Lady Gaga</a> kicked off her hotly awaited <i>Born This Way</i> Ball at Seoul, South Korea's Olympic Stadium on Friday (April 27) in front of 45,000 fans, and despite <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-17867102" target="_blank">protests</a> from Christian groups saying Mother Monster was "obscene" and could "taint" young people with her performance, the concert appears to have gone on without incident.</P><P>Intrepid Twitter fans are already showing off pictures and video of the <i>BTW</i> Ball's enormous Gothic castle backdrop and myriad costume changes, making it clear that Gaga has outdone even her own Monster Ball in terms of spectacle.</P><P>While we wait for reviews to trickle in from halfway around the world, one thing is certain: No minors were corrupted at the show. Earlier this month, the Korea Media Rating Board decided to <a href="http://newsroom.mtv.com/2012/04/02/lady-gaga-unfazed-by-south-korean-concert-age-restrictions/">elevate the age rating</a> for the concert from 12 to 18, prohibiting minors from seeing the concert. When the board notified Gaga's tour promotion company and a sponsor of the change in age restrictions, it did not offer a reason why the show &#8212; which at the time was still in rehearsals and had not been reviewed publicly &#8212; was considered unsuitable for children under 18.</P><P><CENTER><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:717952/cp~vid%3D717952%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A717952" width="430" height="242" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="."></embed></CENTER></P><P>The likely catalyst for the board's decision came more into focus as the concert neared and protests from a group of conservative Christians calling itself the Alliance for Sound Culture in Sexuality ramped up. The group <a href="http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-31749_162-57419977-10391698/lady-gagas-born-this-way-ball-met-by-protests-in-south-korea/" target="_blank">covered Seoul with posters</a> accusing Gaga of "spreading unhealthy sexual culture" through "lewd lyrics and performances."</P><P>The superstar and her fans, however, were undeterred. Though she <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/ladygaga/status/186886867118080000" target="_blank">tweeted</a> her hopes that the Korea Media Rating Board would reverse its decision (it didn't), she continued on as planned. Many fans reportedly arrived at the show wearing versions of Gaga's most well-known flamboyant costumes, and there have been no reports of disturbances at the concert.</P><P>Before the show, Gaga <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/ladygaga/status/195815732494348288" target="_blank">tweeted</a>, "I can you hear you Korea. I'm shaking."</P><P>Gaga's performance was heavy on material from her <i>Born this Way</i> album, though her biggest hits, including "Bad Romance," Poker Face" and "Just Dance," were represented.</P><P>Lady Gaga's <i>Born This Way</i> Ball set list:</P><P><b>&#187;</b> "Highway Unicorn" <br> <b>&#187;</b> "Government Hooker"<br> <b>&#187;</b> "Born This Way"<br> <b>&#187;</b> "Bloody Mary"<br> <b>&#187;</b> "Bad Romance"<br> <b>&#187;</b> "Fashion of His Love"<br> <b>&#187;</b> "The Queen"<br> <b>&#187;</b> "Just Dance"<br> <b>&#187;</b> "Love Game"<br> <b>&#187;</b> "Telephone"<br> <b>&#187;</b> "Just Dance"<br> <b>&#187;</b> "Heavy Metal Lover"<br> <b>&#187;</b> "Bad Kids"<br> <b>&#187;</b> "Hair"<br> <b>&#187;</b> "Yo&#252; and I"<br> <b>&#187;</b> "Electric Chapel"<br> <b>&#187;</b> "Americano"<br> <b>&#187;</b> "Poker Face"<br> <b>&#187;</b> "Schei&#223;e"<br> <b>&#187;</b> "The Edge of Glory"<br> <b>&#187;</b> "Marry the Night"</P><P><i>Did you see Lady Gaga's </i>Born This Way<i> Ball? 'Battleship': The Reviews Are In!

Critics were surprised by how much they enjoyed Peter Berg's film, giving credit to its entertainment factor.

Many movie fans have been wary as to whether director Peter Berg could successfully pull of "Battleship." Inspired by a Hasbro board game giving no hint of any type of plot, the sci-fi epic follows the adventures of an international Navy fleet when aliens begin to invade earth. As the two forces go to battle, each must rely on a crafty, cunning strategy in order to conquer their enemy. The all-star, insanely attractive cast includes Taylor Kitsch, Brooklyn Decker, Alexander Skarsgård, Liam Neeson and Rihanna, in her movie debut.

While some have written off "Battleship" as a lesser version of "Transformers," critics were surprised by how much they enjoyed the film. They praise the movie for not taking itself too seriously and give credit to its entertainment factor.

The Story
"The surprise, for this veteran of board games, is that Battleship is also the rousing, engaging, and emotionally complex action war picture the silly 2001 action war picture 'Pearl Harbor' only wished it could be. It's 'Pearl Harbor' with greater intelligence, less hokum, and more aliens. For every line of howler dialogue that should have been sunk, there's a nice little scene in which humans have to make a difficult decision. For every stretch of generic sci-fi-via-CGI moviemaking, there's a welcome bit of wit. Under the direction of Peter Berg — the talented, ever-maturing filmmaker behind 'Friday Night Lights' and 'The Kingdom' — 'Battleship' is a sound vessel floating in Hollywood's oil-slick sea of 'Transformers' sequels and vampire riffs." — Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly

The Cast
"The attractive cast does no more than Berg and the script require, which is very little indeed. After 'John Carter,' Kitsch is still waiting for a film vehicle to make good on the easy, authentic charm he exhibits in TV's 'Friday Night Lights,' though he's physically up to the task here. Fans of pop megastar Rihanna, making her film debut, will be disappointed to find that the role of Raikes may as well be renamed Young Female Demographic for all the pertinence it has to the narrative, but she's a sparky enough presence." — Guy Lodge, Variety

"Kitsch, coming off the super-flop 'John Carter,' soft-pedals the charm, exuding just enough charisma to get by. The striking-looking Skarsgård ('True Blood') is ramrod-straight and impossibly grave throughout, while Decker's expression toggles between blank and very blank." — Megan Lehmann, The Hollywood Reporter

The Special Effects
"Tech credits are all polished, if not as metallically sleek as they would be with a Michael Bay-style craftsman at the helm. Tobias Schliesser's lensing covers the teal-and-orange palette seemingly mandatory for such adventures these days, while Steve Jablonsky's score thumps and drones away with nary a pause, little betraying the presence of rock super-producer Rick Rubin and Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello on the music team. The bulk of the attention in this evidently expensive production has been lavished on Industrial Light & Magic's typically immaculate effects, which are firmly in the "Transformers" mold stylistically, with the added challenge of water simulation. That such state-of-the-art creations have been used to realize a story whose climax hinges on a true-life WWII battleship, USS Missouri, outlasting its newer, shinier rivals is an irony probably lost on all involved." — Lodge

The Final Word
"The creative team behind this ocean-bound thriller decided to fill the narrative black hole with a few ingredients all but absent from today's summer tent poles — namely mystery, nostalgia and a healthy dose of humility. Just as blockbusters have made the hard turn towards fantasy heroes who solemnly go about their business in high-def-but-low-impact 3D cage matches, Battleship is an unapologetically goofy, surprisingly enigmatic, refreshingly self-deprecating deviation from the norm. I hesitate to confess that I had more fun here than I did at 'The Avengers,' because low expectations surely had a lot to do with it, but it's the truth. Heck, I'd pay to see the thing again." — Steven James Snyder, TIME Magazine
