TORAH for the CHOSEN & FOR EVERYBODY ELSE

Daily and when one is called to the Torah one recites a blessing thanking G-D for . . . choosing us from all other nations and gave us His Torah . . . . The implication is the revelation at Sinai where the Torah was revealed and given was exclusively Jewish event that the rest of the nation had no part. The exclusively Jewish nature of the Law giving is supported by Shemot 19:5 . . . .if you will obey My voice indeed, and keep My Covenant, then you shall be My own treasure among all peoples; for all the earth is Mine; G-D introduces the special relationship between Bene Yisrael and the A-lmighty by reminding the nation You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I carried you on eagles wings, and brought you to Myself. (19:4). G-D called upon the Bene Yisrael to recall what transpired during the Exodus. Even a cursory review would lead one to conclude there not only existed a debt of gratitude between Bene Yisrael and G-D but an understanding that a deeper connection between G-D and this nation is present. The commentaries discussing 19:5 point out that though humanity is beloved and enjoys a special relationship with G-D, Jewry has a singularly unique connection with G-D. Jewrys special status being particularly beloved and fit for the Kings service from all humanity comes from the Creators knowledge as the . . .whole Earth is Mine G-D knew there is something unique the descendants of Avraham, Yitzchak and Yaakov possess that particularly make them appropriate to receive the Torah (see Rashi ZTL ZYA and Seforno ZTL ZYA 19:5).However, if the Torah is specifically given to Bene Yisrael and no one else then why did G-D give the Torah in the desert and not the Land of Israel? Indeed the Yalkut Shemeni notes the Torah was given in a place that no one nation can lay claim to, somewhere open to all. Thereby anyone who so desires can accept the Torah. Rabbi Yossef Shalom Elyashiv Shlita, May G-D grant him a speedy recovery comments had the Torah not been given in a desert the nations would conclude they had no connection to Torah at all. An attitude that is contrary to the notion of what Torah is at its core, the means by which the whole creation becomes aligned with G-Ds will. Rabbi Eliyashiv continues observing many pillars of the Oral Law had ancestors from the nations who converted ,personages like, Shamaiya and Avtalyon, Rabbi Akiva, Rabbi Meir, Onkles, and even Hamans descendents who taught Torah in Bene Barak. Demonstrating that all of humanity has the ability to merit Torah (Divrei Agada 170-171)Rabbi Baruch of Kassov ZTL ZYA asks why belief in G-D is predicated on . . . who have brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. (20:2) and not creation of heaven and Earth? The Rabbi offers two answers the first drawing from the peoples experience , the Exodus makes more of an impression than Creation which no one present or in the future could relate to on a first person basis. Additionally the Exodus bears witness to creation because if G-D did not create the world how natural order of things could be changed during the plagues? Therefore, even the connection between faith and the Exodus is not necessarily exclusive to Jewry. All people could see that the miraculous events surrounding the plagues and Exodus all point to G-Ds personal involvement in human affairs and hands on control of creation. If then there exists a universal aspect to G-D giving the Torah. What is exclusively Jewish that makes the nation the Chosen People? Rabbi Dovid Hofstadter Shlita (Doresh Dovid II:151-152) suggests what sets Jewry apart is the acceptance of Torah. An acceptance that encompasses a desire to know and fulfill all G-D has to teach. Bene Yisrael is prepared to remain faithful even if one must exercise effort. Many may be impressed with the Torahs wisdom or with the intellectual brilliance underlying Talmudic discussions. However the drive to toil in Torah, struggling with ideas and concepts despite difficulty, elusiveness and time does not abate. The readiness to relentlessly pursue Torah to plumb the depths of G-Ds revealed will because Bene Yisrael are not motivated by intellectual depth or philosophical profundity but by a passion to know the will of G-D.Rabbi Hofstadters observation puts the universal and Jewish aspects of the Torahs revelation in to focus. The Torah is given in the desert, open to all willing to come and yet the Torah is given to Bene Yisrael, the chosen people. The common shared value is an unqualified acceptance of Torah, a readiness to devote oneself to know G-Ds will and to fulfill His commandments. No individual prepared to accept Torah should be denied access and there was no nation like Bene Yisrael who were prepared en masse to declare . . . we will do and we will listen. (24:7)See More
