GSP DG in trouble over complaints about corruption, nepotism and incompetence
"dailytimes.com.pk", Pakistan on 22nd September 2011 : …...GSP Staff Association President Ghulam Nabi Raisani, Muhammad Khalid Khan, Daud Khan, Muhammad Tahir Khan Jadoon and others told Daily Times that there were lots of complaints about corruption, nepotism and incompetence of GSP DG Dr Imran Ahmed Khan. Dr Imran has been misusing his seat for corruption due to which majority of the officers in the department are against him, they said, adding, the DG due to DG’s conflict with the staff and other officers the department has become stagnant.....Officers of the GSP have given a written statement that Dr Imran was not eligible to become DG because in his ACR there were two marks less due to which he made a fake certificate from a university and prepared new ACRs from irrelevant persons.





51 Fake Universities listed by National Universities Commission
"allafrica.com", Mauritius on 20th September 2011 : The number of fake universities operating in the country has risen from 44 to 51, National Universities Commission (NUC) has alerted. According to the weekly news bulletin of NUC, eight of the universities had been taken to court, while some are currently undergoing investigations. The eight illegal universities, either in court or currently being investigated, according to the Executive Secretary Julius Okojie, are National University of Nigeria, Keffi, Nasarawa State; North Central University, Oturkpo, Benue State and Christ Alive Christian Seminary and University, Enugu State.





Country's capital bags distinction of playing host to the largest number of illegal educational institutes

The Capital has bagged the dubious distinction of playing host to the largest number of illegal educational institutes in the country......The K. R. Mangalam Global Institute of Management in Greater Kailash, for instance, informed this reporter (posing as an MBA aspirant) that their MBA degree did not require AICTE approval as it was offered by Mysore University, which is UGC recognised. Similarly, the FOSTIIMA Business School in South Extension, a five-year-old institute that boasts being set up by seven alumni of IIM Ahmedabad, also said its MBA degree was legal as it was offered through a tieup with Pondicherry University.





Police confirms Deputy Health Minister yet to obtain doctoral degree
"vietnamnet.vn", Vietnam on 19th September 2011 : Police have confirmed that Deputy Minister of Health, Cao Minh Quang, used a fake doctoral degree. Investigators from the Internal Political Security Department under the Ministry of Public Security, confirmed that Deputy Minister Quang has yet to obtain the doctoral degree in pharmacy as he claimed. The investigation of Quang’s diploma was conducted after a resident in HCM City, Ngo Minh Nho, accused Quang of falsely claiming that he has a PhD in Pharmacy.





Trio accused of making bogus certificates and degrees
"daijiworld.com", India on 17th September 2011 : Three people, accused of making fake educational certificates and degrees, were arrested in Uttar Pradesh's Meerut district, police said Saturday. Govind, Ankit and Rajendra - all in their late 30s - were nabbed from Bramapuri area Friday night following a joint operation by the Special Operations Group and the district police. "We raided a hideout and recovered over 500 fake degrees, certificates and mark sheets of law, engineering, business administration and other programmes," police inspector Alok Sharma told reporters in Meerut, some 450 km from here.





Fake university uncovered by Italian police
"lhrtimes.com", Pakistan on 16th September 2011 : Italian police on Friday said they discovered a fake university in the north of the country where around 10 students were paying around 7,000 euros ($9,600) for a worthless, unrecognised degree. The university in Verona called “Carolus Magnus” (Charlemagne) was founded in 2005 in Rome by several people that belonged to a cultural association, which later transferred its headquarters to Verona, police said in a statement. The university offered courses in “art and entertainment management” or “economics and business management” and assured it was registered with other public and private universities, none of which were known to Italy’s education ministry.





Job applicant submits fake certificate
"news.sl", Sierra Leone on 15th September 2011 : Local tabloids say the Principal of the Virtues International Academy Mr. Idrissa Barthalowen Sesay in Freetown has disclosed that an applicant who applied for the position of teaching in his school submitted a fake certificate. According to reports, James Augustus Showers applied to teach physics and mathematic and the certificate he submitted bears the name of Njala University and was signed in 2005 by Professor Author Porter as Vice Chancellor.





Hospital exposes doctor with fake qualification
"mumbaimirror.com", India on 13th September 2011 : At a time when the government continues to form rules to curb sex determination tests, Sion hospital has come across a doctor who submitted a fake work experience certificate to enable him to practise as a radiologist in Rajasthan. This fraud was exposed when the chief medical officer of the hospital in Rajasthan sent the certificate to Sion hospital for verification. As per new guidelines, without a mandatory one year’s experience in a renowned hospital, even a qualified radiologist cannot perform sonographies, commonly used in sex determination tests.





Cops busts bogus degree racket
"daily.bhaskar.com", India on 11th September 2011 : In a major crackdown, police has busted a gang involved with the Punjab State Education Board in the making of fake degrees. The police has arrested a member of the gang which used to provide fake degrees of class XII, X and VIII. The police has also recovered five fake degrees from the possession of the gang member. The gang used to sell these at a price of between Rs. 20,000 and 30,000. Talking to the reporters during a press conference on Saturday, SP D Jagtar Singh Kanth said, "The accused Nirbhay Singh is a native of Dayalpur (Bhatinda). He had a close nexus with the Punjab State Education Board officials and with their help, he used to get the fake degrees readied."





Eight behind bars in bogus doctors case
"tribune.com.pk", Pakistan on 11th September 2011 : Special Judge Anti-Corruption Court Malik Nazeer Ahmed convicted eight people, including former medical superintendent of DHQ Hospital, Dr Khalid Iqbal, for inducting “fake” doctors in 2009. The court however acquitted five co-accused, including three female doctors and the former deputy MS of the hospital, for want of evidence against them. Three brothers Syed Salahuddin, Syed Naseeruddin, Syed Allauddin were appointed as doctors on fake MBBS degrees. A former nurse, Riffat Shaheen, also used a fake degree to get her job. All four have been sentenced to five years in jail. Dr Iqbal too has been sentenced for five years.





Entrepreneur to file law suit to have his degree reinstated
"ceskapozice.cz", Czech Republic on 09th September 2011 : Among the first people to be stripped of a law degree from the faculty of the University of West Bohemia (ZCU) in Plzen - labelled a “diploma mill” in the media for having awarded fast-track degrees under suspicious circumstances - has filed a law suit to have his degree reinstated......Following the revelation in 2009 that the law faculty of the University of West Bohemia in Plzen had been awarding fast-track degrees - to those who had plagiarized or not even submitted dissertations - then Education Minister Miroslava Kopicova ordered an audit of all Czech universities to see if such practices were widespread.





High School principal holds a PhD from unaccredited college
"greensboro.rhinotimes.com", USA on 08th September 2011 : Smith High School Principal Noah Rogers – at $138,000 the highest-paid Guilford County Schools principal and the 14th highest-paid of 10,000 Guilford County Schools employees – claims and advertises a doctorate from a college that has been described as a substandard, unaccredited college or a "diploma mill" by officials in five states, as well as in news articles.....Rogers said that he received his Ph.D. from the Madison University in Gulfport. In case there was any doubt, James Madison University responded to a request for a verification of Rogers' degree with the following: "To Whom It May Concern: This is to verify that James Madison University has no enrollment record of Noah Rogers."





Teachers body approaches ministers over fake degree
"indianexpress.com", India on 08th September 2011 : The Teachers’ Democratic Front has now approached the Chief Minister and School Education Minister with a list of 200 schools which they allege have appointed teachers with bogus degree certificates. According to TDF, the Education Department has failed to take action against such teachers or even verify their degrees. Tired of running from pillar to post, the teachers have also appealed to the Prime Minister to look into the matter......The teachers were identified as Bhuvendra Pratap Singh, Birjuram Yadav and Awdhesh Kumar Girijashankar Shukla from Swami Vivekananda English High School in Jogeshwari, and Shyamlal Yadav and Dayashankar Tiwari from Jawahar Hindi Vidyalaya in Goregaon.





Five with fake results held at Cadet exams

Allieu, has disclosed that among the 35 candidates that entered for the Officer Cadets exams five were caught with fake results. He added that out of the 35 candidates that sat to the exams, only five got 50% and above which is the passing mark. In our previous publications, we published stories with regards students being admitted into the University of Sierra Leone with fake results, and presently students are presenting their school leaving results for verification before the award of a certificate. Private Hassan Jalloh applied with a result that has grade three which should be (Good), but (Credit) was indicated on the result and even the index number is not correct when the result was cross-checked online.





Doctor found guilty of lying about qualifications
"bbc.co.uk", United Kingdom on 06th September 2011 : A doctor who worked at Altnagelvin Hospital has been suspended by the General Medical Council (GMC) after he lied about his qualifications. Dr Aref Al-Awa was a staff doctor at the hospital in Londonderry for one year. He has not been struck off as the GMC found the public was not put at risk by his dishonesty, and he was an otherwise competent doctor. Dr Al-Awa cannot work as a doctor in the UK for one year. His case was examined by the GMC's fitness to practice panel on 28 July. He was found guilty of lying about his qualifications on a number of occasions over a six year period.

Patiala police busts fake degree racket
"timesofindia.indiatimes.com", India on 06th September 2011 : Patiala police has busted an interstate gang involved in sale of fake degrees. The police have detected sale of 1,700 to 1,800 fake degrees of various courses by the three arrested accused. As per police, on Sunday evening the CIA branch of police raided Barren bus stand and arrested Balvir, Gurmeet and Gurpreet Singh and seized six fake degrees of BA, BTech, secondary school and mechanical engineering course. The accused had allegedly come to deliver the degrees to their purchasers. Another gang member Jaswinder Singh is absconding.

Gurung now faces six months in prison in the UAE. According to a 7 Days report, Gurung claimed in court that her university degree certificate was attested with a fake stamp without her knowledge. The incident came to light when she submitted her papers to an employer in November 2009. Her previous employer lost her certificates and she then had to apply for a new one from her university in India. Gurung says she took the help of a friend for attestation by a third-party agent in India. When Gurung took it to the Sharjah Ministry of Foreign Affairs, she was informed that the stamp on her degree was fake and she was taken to the police.
