Daytrip Day 6
Fargo, ND to Regina, Saskatchewan
After reading that Minot, ND was still having issues with flooding, we decided to take the route through Winnipeg instead. This added several hours to our day so we were not able to come as far as we had previously planned. But! The weather was awesome and there was no construction. The border crossing was smooth and we felt so excited to be back in Canada! After driving for 11hrs, we were all ready to get out of the vehicle. There is a restaurant connected to our hotel so we decided to have dinner there. The food took FOREVER to come and the kids were still very antsy after spending all day in the car. We were trying to keep them occupied, but they were just laughing so much and so loudly that we were afraid we were bothering those around us. 2 different ladies came to us and said how our kids laughing really helped to put them in a good mood and they were so thankful for the uplift! You just never know what God may use to minister to those around us. PTL!
Daytrip Day 5
Minneapolis, MN to Fargo, ND
We knew a storm was predicted for central Minnesota, but we had no idea how bad it would become. Derek finished his class around 4pm and we hit the road. It was great to be traveling together! The temperature was well over 90F, and with heavy traffic we had to turn the air conditioning off for fear of overheating the engine. Ugh! Then we stalled in construction but quickly got it started again. It was just so hot! We began to notice rain clouds and black sky. It began to rain, and as I looked out the driver side window, I saw clouds like I had never seen before...except on TV with those crazy storm chaser people. I thought we could outdrive the storm, but traffic was still very congested. I silently started praying for those weird looking clouds to head the other way. God said no. It began to rain very hard, and then the hail started. The hail was the size of large marbles, and they came down with such force. It was about then, that the sky turned emerald green. Now midwesterners I am sure you have stopped reading at this point, but us northerners had never seen such a thing other than the northern lights, and we knew the green tinge had nothing to do with that. We were able to seek shelter under an overpass and the wind increased. I thought we might be blown over. To say we were scared is an understatement. We quickly made 2 phone calls frantically requesting prayer. It seemed to last forever. The radio talked of all the places there was a tornado warning and we were right in the middle. When we finally left the bridge, we saw where a wind shear had come through just a 1/4mile from where we were. We have never been so frightened by Gods storms, but through it all we knew that He was still in control. Thank you so much to all who have been praying for our safety on this long journey!!!!!!!
Earlier in the day, I had fun with the kids at the Mall of America! They enjoyed the rides, and I enjoyed some shopping.
Roadtrip Day 4
Antigo, WI to Bloomington, MN
Today marks the end of Jenny's solo journey! Many worried and prayed for safety and sanity--thank you! There were no problems with the vehicle and the kids were quite manageable.
This day was different because we were able to meet up with friends in Bowler, Wisconsin. Missionary friends (actually they were our mentors) that we met at a missionary training course in Timber Bay, Saskatchewan in 2006. When we met them, Emilie was just 18 months old, and Jenny was pregnant with Dawson. It was great to catch up with them about the last 5 years. From there we hit the road towards Minneapolis where Derek has been since Monday.
The reunion involved a lot of yelling by Emilie. For those of you who know her well, I'm sure you can hear "Daddy! Daddy! I missed you too much! Daddy! Daddy! We're FINALLY together again!" being yelled across the hotel lobby. Although embarrassed for a second, I noticed all the loving glances sent in their direction as she leaped into his arms. It's such a great thing that she loves her Daddy. Dawson was happy too, and just couldn't wait to tell him all about Cabela's and all the swimming pools we had encountered.
The hotel tonight--just 2 miles from the Mall of America (and right next to Walmart).
Although we each had good times earlier this week, it is always sweeter to do things with all 4 of us. We are looking forward to being home next Friday!
Roadtrip
Roadtrip Day 3
Portage, IN to Antigo, WI
The morning started out with breakfast at Denny's. Sure, our hotel had a free breakfast, but let me tell you that you sure get tired of those imposter bagels and cereals real quick. So Denny's it was, and it was fabulous. Then off to Cabela's.
"Didn't you just go to Bass Pro Shop?" Yes, we did. "And now Cabela's?" Yes. 2 of them, in fact. Forget the "golden arches", Cabela's is our PlayPlace. Our kids love it! Usually we first find the aquarium and animal mounts, but by far, their favourite is the laser shooting range.
We didn't hit as much construction today, but still enough to be annoying. Just want to mention that Rt 45 North in WI takes you through the middle of the boondocks. Even saw a sign for a town with less people than Teslin. Made it to Antigo, WI and our hotel is again in a prime location--walking distance to Walmart. Kids are in the pool--that's all for tonight!
Roadtrip Day 2
Elyria, OH to Portage, IN
The kids seemed to sleep well Monday night, although I learned that Dawson kicks like a mule in his sleep.
Today we saw much more construction, and an accident which tied us up for at least 1/2 hour. I'm thinking that they shouldn't charge so much for tolls when there is construction every 10 miles.
The kids did well again in the car, they don't seem to mind this trip. I think it helps that these days are shorter (only 6 or 7 hours in the car) with a swimming pool at every hotel. The location of this hotel in Portage is AWESOME! It is within walking distance of Bass Pro Shop and Starbucks. Bass Pro Shop is having "family days" so we were able to attend several workshop talks and activities. See pics below
Road Trip Day 1
Binghamton, NY to Elyria, OH
Jenny & the kids left Binghamton around 9AM and arrived in Elyria at 4:30. Lots of construction, but nothing else to really comment on. We enjoyed Adventures in Odyssey in the morning and the kids watched a DVD in the afternoon. Lots of loud singing in between!
The truck is very full, but there is a small bit that you can see out the back window! This is only because Derek is not with us so the front passenger seat is full of luggage.
Derek flew to Minneapolis to attend a church planting conference and we will meet up with him on Day 4
