Why take a chance?
Speech and language development is a "natural" process in that it typically evolves in a certain pattern and without direct therapeutic intervention.  HOWEVER, do not underestimate the BIG role that parents play in this developmental process.  Parents are constantly helping their child learn new vocabulary words, develop speaking confidence, learn social skills, and lengthen their sentences and make them more complex, and more grammatically correct.  Many parents also correct their child's speech sounds to help them learn the appropriate speech patterns.  Who's to say that children with "excellent" language skills were just born with that capacity?  Who's to say that "excellent" speech and language guidance by parents didn't play a part in that development?

Certain speech sound and grammatical errors are expected at certain ages, especially in the toddler and preschool years.  Most parents will instinctively "correct" their child's speech by repeating back what they said with the correct grammatical form, for example.  And most children will develop speech and language skills "normally", without extra help from a speech-language pathologist.  HOWEVER, the fact is, some children do NOT end up "growing out" of their "baby talk" speech and language patterns.  These children will eventually be considered to be speech and/or language "delayed", and possibly "disordered" on down the road.  And no one can predict which children will easily move out of the normal patterns of incorrect speech and grammar and which ones will eventually be considered speech and/or language disordered.

The SpeechWaysTM home speech therapy program is designed to teach parents simple techniques to help improve their child's speech and/or language skills. SpeechWaysTM helps to improve the chances that your child will move smoothly through certain developmental speech, fluency ("stuttering"), and grammar stages, as well as guide you on how to help your child increase her vocabulary skills.  To learn more about what the SpeechWaysTM program offers, visit www.myspeechways.com today!

Parents in Charge!
Parents are the most important team members in any speech and language therapy endeavor.  Think about it:  you, the parent, are with your young child more than any other person in her life.  Even if your child attends preschool or daycare all day, it is YOU who knows her temperament, knows her habits, and knows her likes and dislikes best.  Parents usually have a good sense of how their child reacts to praise and what motivates her the most effectively.  So it is parents who are best at informing caregivers of how to interact with their child to get the most desirable behaviors, the most participation, etc.  Experienced speech-language pathologists help to "train" parents as soon as possible on how to reinforce their child's correct speech sound productions, at the word level, the sentence level, and into conversation.  They know that it is PARENTS that will be the most effective in achieving improved speech and language skills in their child.

As with most aspects of your child's daily activities and needs, parents are the most effective "speech therapists" for their own child, once they have a few simple tools to help their child develop speech and language skills.  While some children will actually need to go to a speech clinic or public school and receive speech therapy services from a certified speech-language pathologist, there are many children who can benefit from a few simple techniques that parents can learn directly.  Many speech sound techniques, as well as effective reinforcement techniques, are easily taught to parents, who can then help their child move out of the "baby talk" phase and into the next developmental stages of speech and language, AT A FRACTION OF THE COST OF TRADITIONAL SPEECH THERAPY!  These simple, straightforward techniques can address vocabulary development, stuttering, voice problems, as well as various speech sound errors.  For more information on how to access these techniques, visit www.myspeechways.com

Early is Better!
Any speech-language pathologist who is keeping up on the latest research knows that EARLY INTERVENTION is very important in helping children with speech and language delays.  Children have an amazing capacity to learn new information, as long as they are exposed to it.  As they get older, and "bad" speech habits have become more solidified, it can take much longer to fix articulation, or speech sound, errors.  Kids get used to the way the incorrect sound feels in their mouth AND the way it sounds in their ear.  If you can help your child to learn the correct way of saying a speech sound early, their new feel and sound of "normal" will take hold, making a transition of the correct sound into conversation much easier and faster!  Find out more about my parent-driven, home speech therapy program that helps parents do just that at www.myspeechways.com
